The week before my Ph.D. thesis defense, the wind was good; for four days the wind was good. In Boston, when the wind is good, you go to the beach. It doesn't matter if you have work, obligations, family, or a thesis defense, because it may never blow again.

So for four days (April 29 - May 2), I kitesurfed at Pleasure Bay rather than prepare my defense. My picture even appeared in the Boston Globe. Good thing my advisor didn't notice; otherwise, I might not have passed!

These are the pictures the Globe photographer, Joanne Rathe, took on the first of the four days. Somehow, I got lucky and was the only one on the water when she arrived, so I got all the glory. These are, by far, some of the best kiting pictures ever taken of me.
